Immigration and Work Visa Requirements in Indonesia

Do you have a plan to work in one of the largest emerging markets in the world? Nowadays, Indonesia has become a magnet for many foreign workers to make a living and build their career. The growing economy has employed around 128 million Indonesians in a more diverse environment. As the local and international e-commerce and tech startup sectors are also growing enormously, there are many chances open for overseas talent to fill in various job positions in those companies in Indonesia.

However, getting an expatriate work permit in Indonesia is not an easy job if you haven’t secured a job before arriving in Indonesia. Thus, getting a work permit (IMTA) is a must.

What Kind of Visa Do You Need?

The foreigners who were granted the work visa were mostly sponsored or guaranteed by the companies who hire them in their home country. The company must apply to the Directorate General of Immigration in Jakarta. They will inform the Indonesian embassy in your country to issue a temporary stay visa (VITAS) for you.

Within seven days since you arrive in Indonesia, you need to send a report to the immigration office in Indonesia about your arrival so that they can issue a limited stay permit card (KITAS) for you. You will also be given a Foreigner’s Control and Supervision book and an identification card that you must keep in a safe place. KITAS must be renewed every year for a maximum of five years.

After receiving KITAS card, you can obtain an expatriate work permit (IKTA). Before the card is issued, the company who hires you must pay a Skill and Development Fund (DPKK) fee of 1200 USD.

If you were married to an Indonesian citizen, being an investor of an Indonesian company, or an elderly who wish to spend the rest of your life in Indonesia, you might apply for KITAP (Kartu Izin Tinggal Tetap) or Permanent Stay Permit. Only a foreign worker who has married for a minimum two years and an investor who has KITAS for three consecutive years who can apply for KITAP. The visa can be obtained for five years and extended for an indefinite time.
