How Long Does the KITAS Process Take?

If you have a plan to stay or work in Indonesia for more than a several months, you need to apply for a limited stay permit called KITAS. In order to make a solid plan for your moving day to Indonesia, you have to know about the KITAS process and how long does it take to obtain one. The steps and process duration are different for each type of KITAS. And these are three types of stay permit in Indonesia that are most commonly possessed by non-Indonesian citizens:

1.     KITAS Sponsored by Indonesian Entities
This is the other words for working KITAS. If you are hired to work in Indonesia by either Indonesian-owned company, a foundation, or even a foreign-owned company in Indonesia, then you need to apply for one. The duration of the working permit KITAS may vary from 1 up to 1,5 months depends on how fast the authorities process is. What you have to make sure is your employer submit the complete documents and follows the steps correctly.

The first step is to acquire a working visa is gaining the Foreign Manpower Plan Approval from the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower. After getting the approval, the company will pay the Development Funds (DKP-TKA) in exchange for hiring a foreign worker. The DKP-TKA payment is US$100/month, so if you are getting a 6 months permit than it is US$600 in total. After you got your working permit, it will be converted into VITAS (limited stay permit), and after obtaining the VITAS, you can enter Indonesia. Later in Indonesia, you need to convert your VITAS into KITAS (limited stay permits card). You must convert your VITAS into a KITAS within 30 days from your arrival date in Indonesia.

2.     KITAS Sponsored by Indonesian Spouse
If you are married to an Indonesian citizen, you can acquire this type of KITAS. However, you have to remember that this type of KITAS only allows you to stay and live in Indonesia, you can’t work at all. If you want to work, you have to apply for a working KITAS mentioned above instead. The process of obtaining a spouse-sponsored KITAS can take up to 1 month. This duration is the average length, so it may be faster or slower depending on how the authority works in the area. Remember to always prepare for the required documents and the copies when you are applying for one.

To apply for this type of KITAS, you have to own a legal marriage certificate acknowledge by the government of Indonesia. If your marriage happens outside Indonesia, make sure to translate the marriage document into Indonesian first. Beside marriage certificate, you will also need your Indonesian spouse sponsor letter, bank statement, family card (KK) and ID card (which has to be stated as “married” in the status column).

You need to renew your KITAS annually. But, if you have been married to an Indonesian citizen for two years, you can apply for KITAP (permanent residence visa).

3.     Retirement KITAS
If you are older than 55 years old and planning to enjoy your retirement days in Indonesia, you can apply for retirement KITAS. The process of retirement KITAS can be said as the fastest on average among any other common KITAS in Indonesia. Usually, it takes around 10 business days from the day of application submission. Besides age, there are several other requirements for you to be eligible for this type of visa such as:

·         You will not work in Indonesia.
·         You have a living place in Indonesia.
·         You own life and health insurance.
·         You have to own at least USD$18,000 per year to live in Indonesia

·         You are a citizen of a country that is available to apply for retirement visa program in Indonesia.
